Unfortunately, most of these debates have revolved around the death penalty's costs. While it may be an effective political angle to garner public support for abolition, I think it obscures many of the important moral and legal questions, and it demands a sickening moral calculus. Just like death penalty supporters have argued "it's cheaper to kill 'em," opponents shouldn't argue that it's cheaper to keep them alive. Like torture, it's either moral or it's not; costs and other instrumental benefits, in my view, should not be part of a serious discussion. The Legionnairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08452075448107219964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8140359640502106156.post-17119207231716162452009-04-28T14:09:00.000-04:002009-04-28T14:09:00.000-04:00Andrew, recently you have taken your blog to a who...Andrew, recently you have taken your blog to a whole new level. This is a really insightful perspective that I wish would make it into the mainstream discussion. Wouldn't it be great if the Guantanamo torture scandal precipitated a nationwide reevaluation of the death penalty?Ryannoreply@blogger.com
